No, I am not asking about wetsuits, drysuits, or "fuzzy rubber" . . . . but I
have been thinking about water protection. Here's a couple of questions for
the Paddlewise panel of experts.

First, what's good way to laminate reference materials for use underway? I'm
thinking about small charts, tide tables, inspirational anecdotes from
Paddlewise -- anything that might prove useful on the water.

Second, what kind of thermometer is best to use for measuring water temps and
what are some good sources? I've checked a few of the more obvious outdoor
and marine retail outlets and come up empty.

Cheers,

Kinkos will color copy and laminate whatever you want to copy to carry on
your deck. It costs but it will last a long time this way and preserve the
original.

we got ours from a pool supply company. So far so good. and is big enough to
read without the glasses <G>

There are "map-seal" brush-on products available that seal the paper and
make it waterproof, but still allow you to fold the paper.

For lamination, I'd go to a Kinko's, Insty-Prints, or other
self-service/professional copy and print shop. Most of their lamination
services are pretty reasonable. Or, just keep it all in the chart case.

Got home from Canoecopia late last night. Good show, although no Neckys and
no Eddylines made it a little disappointing, and the drive through the
Chicago traffic was hair raising. Simple country boy that I am, I can only
handle so much of that NASCAR-participatory driving.

However, in view of the discussion we had recently about alcohol stoves, I
made it a point to have a go-round with the gal at the MSR booth. It turns
out that MSR still has the Mini-Trangia 28 in their current catalog. If
you're interested, I didn't check, but if you can't order direct from MSR I
suppose your outdoor retailer can.

My current method for keeping reference materials dry is to have them
laminated. A few of us started doing this last year, and so far, this has
proven the best for us. My local OfficeMax can laminate sizes of 8-1/2x11
or 11x16 so I cut up my charts to accomodate the sizing requirements, but
keep all sections grouped together so I don't have to worry about setting a
compass rose on each panel. In the past I have used the chart cases but the
cases would tend to steam up and fog thus creating condensation inside.
Plus, it required stopping periodically to open the case, open the chart,
refold the chart and then reseal it in the case. Also, if making copies and
putting them in the case, the ink tended to adhere to the plastic of the
case. Then I switched to using waterproofing products (both the spray and
paint-on types). The waterproofing was too much work and only lasted lasted
1 maybe 2 trips. I have had to replace all of those charts.

The thermometer I use was purchased at Campmor. I comes in a little
hard-plastic case, thinner than a pencil and easily fits into any PFD
pocket.
