Hello there everyone,

Just something I'd like to share with any VCP paddlers out there...

I paddle a VCP Pintail. This boat has an adjustable skeg which is
controlled with a cable running inside the boat to a slider forward of
the cockpit. My problem has been that the rear compartment always had
some water in it at the end of a days paddling. Talking to my supplier
(Knoydart in the Lake District, UK) - they suggested rotating the metal
sleeve where the cable and fibreglass meet just above the skeg box inside
the rear hatch. This did not fix the problem! BTW - my wife has an
identical boat and it has never leaked at all.

Before paddling this weekend I used self-amalgamating tape (the stuff you
stretch and it sticks to itself), to cover up the gap between the metal
sleeve and the cable - result - bone dry compartment, so airtight the
flexible hatch lid was concave at the end of the day. No more wet
belongings!

Cheers,

Keith

Both my Nordkapps, one with the old and one with the new skeg have airtight
hatches, a real concern going from cool water (75F) to a hot car top. I
usually pull the hatches off when I travel to avoid blowing a bulkhead or
stressing the rubber cover.

Yes I always store the boat with hatches off, I usually just push them
into the compartment so they are always with the boat... they are also
permamently attatched to the boat with little bits of string so they
can't be droped at sea or blown away at camp!
