The scene is looking west at the Hudson River from the pier on which the Downtown Boathouse is located. Below is the kayak dock. We have since connected a long ramp down to the kayak dock which takes up some dock space but makes it easier to carry kayaks up and down. The tide is at about mid-level, i.e. it has some more to drop to hit low tide. In the background is New Jersey. Less than a decade ago you would have seen none of those tall buildings and on a clear day could see all the way to first mountain range (well westerners wouldn't call it that) in New Jersey. Those building represent major moves by financial and other companies away from Manhattan for tax incentive, rental costs and space reasons. The river is about 0.8 miles wide at this point. Just over my left shoulder is where the Palisades begin to go underground and eventually pass under Staten Island to taper off in the ocean. There is also one of the numerous ever-present ferries but you probably can't make it out. Further north about 12 miles the Palisades form cliffs almost 500 feet high with several waterfalls taller than Niagra albeit no where as powerful. To go to the Statue of Liberty you would head out and then down river, i.e. to the left side of the photo. It's about 3 miles to the Statue. What you can't see in the photo are the 15 or so public kayaks that out in the large embayment to the right of the photo nor the large group of people waiting their turn behind the photographer. These are free for use in the embayment by the general public. Last year we put about 8,000 or so people on the water. That isn't a guess, it's a count of the annual waivers we ask be signed. Right after Sandy left, on that same day, two people who had met while waiting to use the public kayaks the previous year got married on the water. The ceremony was all in kayaks, bride and groom and wedding party and some witnesses including me and my wife. I was hoping Sandy would stay for the wedding but she has been married so many times, she's gotten blase about it all. :-) ralph diaz -- ----------------------------------------------------------------------- Ralph Diaz . . . And as for your flippant "married so many times" remark, I've ONLY been married twice! Of the 11 or so people on the Long Key clean up, two guys had been married three times! Actually, I like to say that "two have tried, and failed." Sandy Kramer who thought she could write endlessly. She has transferred the honor to Ralph who can take one photograph of two people and write a one-page essay about the background :) *************************************************************************** PaddleWise Paddling Mailing List - All postings copyright the author and not to be reproduced outside PaddleWise without author's permission Submissions: paddlewise_at_lists.intelenet.net Subscriptions: paddlewise-request_at_lists.intelenet.net Website: http://www.paddlewise.net/ ***************************************************************************
