Last year I purchased a Ford F-150 and was immediately faced with the problem of how to carry kayaks *without* adding a full size fiberglass/aluminum topper. Surfing the net provided info on several possibilities, including a product called Rail-N-Rack. This is a fold down rack that is made of steel, holds up to 500-600 pounds, and folds down to form bed rails when not in use. The racks were delivered within a few weeks once ordered directly from the company and were easy to install. It took a little while to work out how to fasten my Yakima cradles and rollers to the 1" box frame cross bars, but once set up, the system has been easy to adjust for different boats and has worked flawlessly. Lots of tie down straps are warranted, however, because they are required to hold the removable cross pieces in place (see their site for information). Since the rack system does form bed rails when folded down, it precludes the use of a full fiberglass bed cover. Fabric tauneu covers can easily be found that do fasten INSIDE the box/rail edge and thus can be used with this system. A photo of the rack, folded down, can be seen here -->http://www.wahls.net/Photo_pages/f_FordNDagger.htm.
