Paddlewise, As Ralph Diaz has explained, each year we have a swim race around Manhattan Island. 28.5 miles from the Battery and return. How dirty is it? I'll leave that to the scientists. You can go to the Manhattan Island Foundation site and click on "water quality". http://www.nycswim.org/ The Foundation is the organizer and sponsor for this swim race, individual efforts at records, and others in the Hudson River. Here is what some of the records are for the swim. On June 12, 1999 Tobie Smith, a 25-year-old college student from Austin, Texas, won the 18th annual Manhattan Island Marathon Swim. Her record time for the 28.5 mile course was six hours, 32 minutes, 41 seconds (6:32:41.) It was her first attempt at the swim. She received the Gallagher Cup, named for MIMS founder Drury Gallagher, for winning the race. On Wednesday, July 14, 1999, in an individual effort Becky Fenson swam around Manhattan, beginning at 2a.m.. She finished her lap around the island in 6:07:46. Her time is now #4 on the all time list, behind Shelly Taylor-Smith (5:45:25 in '95), Kris Rutford (5:53:57 in '93) and Marcia Cleveland (5:57:53 in '96). Hope this is interesting enough to encourage some of you to join us on June 17, 2000 as kayakers. We had 30 individuals and 2 relays last year. Each had at least one kayaker along side the entire way. Get in touch.
