Hi Allison, We have our boats suspended by pulley systems from the garage ceiling directly above the yak rack saddles on the car. When stowed, the boats clear the rack by 6 inches or so. This arrangment makes it very fast and easy to load and unload the boats to & from the car, and keeps them out of the way (of course, I have had to learn to duck when crossing the garage). It also allows me to lower the boats onto horses or to the floor for repairs -- or, for simple repairs, checks of hatches, etc., I can just lower the boats to a convenient level and hoist them up again when done. I would imagine that your landlord will be a lot less picky about your drilling into the joists of the garage ceiling than he would about drilling in the apartment. As others have mentioned, spackle and a little paint will make those holes disappear when you move.
