I have a wooden kayak that I've been storing in my living room for the winter. I was cleaning and, alas, a heavy iron picture frame fell off the mantel and gouged the deck! So I now have a puncture wound and am wondering the best way to fix it. The deck is 3 or 4 ply plywood with about 3 coats of epoxy and 5 coats of varnish. And the hole is about 1 inch long and 1/2 inch wide. The corner of the frame did go all the way through but most of the wood is still hanging on a bit. (It's quite hard to describe this sort of thing!) Are you looking for a utilitarian repair or a perfect cosmetic repair? If you're just looking for strength, just shove all the wood fibers back into the hole and use a bunch of masking tape on the backside to seal it from epoxy dripping through. Pour 1/2-1 oz. of epoxy into the mass of wood fibers and put some more masking tape over the hole to hold everything down flat. If you're looking for a more aesthetic repair, cut a piece of deck material (wait, did you build this boat yourself and keep any of the scraps) a bit larger than the hole. Trace the shape of the patch onto the deck and cut out the damaged wood with an X-acto knife. Coat both the edges of both the deck and the patch with some unthickened epoxy, then a layer of thickened epoxy. Drop the patch into the hole and secure it with some masking tape. Once the epoxy has cured, use a bit more unthickened epoxy to fill in any low spots or holes, and sand and re-varnish. Good luck! Shawn Courtney wrote: >the best way to fix it.
