Hi Folks-

So I'm really excited to have found a new apartment located approximately
200 yards from a river that empties into the ocean. wahoo! But there are
problems...there is zero storage space. So I'm trying to figure out how the
heck to fit a kayak into the place. I'm not sure if I can hang one up-the
ceilings are really high and I don't think drilling into the wall would be
appreciated by neighbors and landlords and such. Has anyone had success in
storing boats under their beds:)? Right now the boats are hanging in slings
out in the garage and I'm worried about the side effects of storing them
flat on the floor, (and of getting stinky river water all over white
carpeting.) I have a few months to figure out a solution, so I'd love
suggestions from fellow apartment dwellers...I'm not opposed to having boats
double as living room furniture....:)

Thanks as always,
A

Well, to pre-empt Ralph: sell 'em and get a folding boat. I'm considering
the very same thing, actually. In the past, I've rented a storage unit to
keep my long boats in, but that can be expensive, though, depending on where
you live. I also hate the idea of spending $50-70 a month for a 10x20 space
to store a boat or two in. I guess I could clean out some overstuffed
closets and put Christmas decorations and such in the storage space, too.

Previously, several of us rented a place together to keep our boats in, but
that requires a serious amount of trust on everyone's part. A violation of
that trust in my situation (I was neither the violator nor the directly
violated) resulted in fisticuffs and charges being filed.

I'd be greatly interested in hearing other suggestions as well. I can't even
choose to keep a touring boat in my apartment, as the largest room is only
14 feet long, and it would probably get in the way lying in the hall (or so
my wife would think).

Cheers,

Steve

I've never done this, exactly, but I think it has possibilities. Cut a
couple of 2x4s so they can be -gently- wedged between floor and ceiling
against the wall. Cut a couple more slightly longer, so they attach to
the tops of the vertical ones and form an angle with the floor, and a
third set of short ones to complete the triangle. Add some pegs at
suitable points to support the boats. Space the triangles bulkhead width
apart, and add a couple of diagonal braces parallel to the wall. Like
