Fellow travelers, There is a terrific article in "Fitness Swimmer" magazine, May/June, 2000, "X-Treme Swimming: Toughest, Longest ([Manhattan]), Nastiest, Scariest", p.56. Kayakers have been the escort of choice for some time now by long-distance. open-water swimmers. It is worth taking a look at your local news stand. Also, they have a web site but no magazine on-line. www.fitnessswimmer.com. I am (almost) embarrassed to mention that I appear on p. 62 sans PFD. It must be an old photo because everyone wears a PFD now. Also there is a photo of Tammy van Wisse in Loch Ness passing Urquardt Castle (p.67). I was lucky enough o be able to accompany her for that swim also, in August, 1999. Cool article. Look around for it. And, the www.nycswim.org web site is almost completely re-built. This week we will be scheduling an informal meeting (in Manhattan) for those kayakers new to the events, interested in more details, and those wishing to meet with some of the organizers for the events. Follow for details. And remember, June 17, the Big Swim! Around Manhattan. We will need kayakers to assist and escort. Get in touch with me if you are interested, available and able.
