Has anyone on the list customized their paddle shaft to provide a larger
diameter, or custom oval or other
shape at the place most gripped?

Several years ago I semi-ovalized the shaft on my old Wind Swift by putting
a couple layers of foam tape on either side where I normally gripped it,
shaping the foam with an X-Acto knife, and then shrinking heat shrink
tubing over it. It gave me a nice feel for the orientation of the blades at
less weight than the Werner paddles of the day. I tried wrapping the shaft
and foam with plastic electrician's tape before switching to the
heat-shrink, but it eventually turned into a sticky mess. :-(

These days I pretty much stick to Greenland paddles, though I have been
thinking of cutting down that old Wind Swift and trying it again...
