what werner currently reccommends is to lightly clean the male connection 
with a *scotchbrite* scouring pad (you can buy them at the grocery 
store--they are green, about 3" X 5", a quarter of an inch thick, and 
soap-free) and the female connection can be cleaned with a bottle brush. i 
stress a light touch here.  and remember to store the paddle in two pieces.
