I agree with you...I have been in the military for over 20 years working with some peculiar organizations where carrying weapons was very appropriate, I'm a hunter, fisherman, and camper.

When I lived/camped/fished/hunted in Alaska I carried a .44 magnum to make me feel 'safe', but having taken a Grizzley with a .300 winchester magnum, I'm here to tell you that a pistol, unless you are well prepared with a place to go and/or well armed backup is a very silly thing to shoot at a bear. Better the pepper spray.

I recommend you carry a weapon for the two-leggeds (lethal or non-lethal as you think appropriate), packed away against loss, theft, and curious children when you won't need it, and close to hand when you think you might. As for the wild critters...don't keep food in your camp or in your kayak...don't get between a mother and her young or a hungry critter and it's food...give wildlife the right of way (they aren't there to stand still for your photos...get a longer lens)...if you go walking in the woods wear blaze orange to keep the amateurs from thinking you are a bear.

So far I haven't seen any wrong answers on the page...we must have a reading audience of responsible folk out there. Way to go.

Buddy

Camping in the wilderness puts you a long way from a 911 call and the police. My wife prefers the peace of mind of knowing we can defend ourselves against "predators". [[large snip]] Call me paranoid but I have had someone try to break into my house while I was there at night. Yelling scared them off, but you can't always bank on that.
