Subject: [Paddlewise] Opinions on double "foldables"?
Next year I am hoping to purchase a "foldable ", probably a double based on the following needs. Have been looking (on line) at the Klepper Expedition II, or Folboat Greenland II. (and less likely Nautiraid Grand Raid 520). I have looked at M.Edelman's info page."

I have never kayaked prior to this year, but the idea of a foldable going down the Missouri appealed to me. I bought a 94 model G-II and have found it to be a very forgiving boat. According to my GPS I'm not going to set any paddling speed records (solo at least) but once you get it moving it keeps speed easily and tracks very well. I had it on the Missouri between Atchison and Ft. Leavenworth this weekend (33 miles on the water, solo, from the aft seat. About an hour into the trip Kansas decided to provide me with a gentle push...a 35-55 mph wind at my back. What a trip. I experienced whitecaps and 2-3 foot rollers along stretches of the river. I had tail winds, cross winds and for a brutal period, a head wind (without a current to help I'd still be going backwards). I'm sold on the the safety and stability of the G-II but wish it would go a little faster.

The worst part of the day was realizing there was no way I could load the boat on top of the car in a 45mph wind. While she went to fetch the car I began to break down the folbot to stuff it inside our SUV. The wind caught the open cockpit and the next thing I know the whole thing is ten feet over my head and twenty feet behind me in a tree. No harm done except to my ego as I finished packing the boat in the back of the explorer.

I have decided my practical wind limits to be somewhat lower than 45 mph.
