Does anyone out there carry their kayak upside down on their vehicle?
I've done this for the past few years because I think its more
aerodynamic and I don't have to worry about covering the cockpit or its
catching a lot of rain. I should mention that my vehicle is an older
Mazda pickup [fairly low] so its easy to load from the side. However
maybe I'm missing something, since I've never seen anyone else doing
this. Thanks for any input. New to paddlewise and am enjoying it.

When my pickup had a regular lumber rack on it, I had some padded 2X4's for
the boats and always carried them upside-down. Now I have a shell with an
over-priced Yakima rack and carry them right-side-up. The former was much
more secure.

Many kayaks have much weaker decks than hulls. Because of that, I
carry mine cockpit side up, although not having to keep the rain
out would be nicer. One of my older, whitewater kayaks has such a
thin deck that I am sure it would break if is cinched it down
tightly onto my rack.

And for something completely different, I built an A-frame (cedar) which
fits on the lumber rack of my Toyota PU. The kayaks (fits 2) rest on
there beams as my thinking is that it is the strongest part of the
plastic boats I am currently carrying. Seems this will be the best for
the CLC I am building now.

I do sometimes. My boat is plastic and has plenty strong decks, which
just happen to fit the contours of my foam blocks. Seems to work well.

My kayaks are almost always upside down on my Yak rack because of the rain
issue. I posted a similar question here a couple of years ago and one
suggestion that somebody had (and this could easily apply to boats carried
hole-up also) is to make sure that the cradles are located under the
bulkheads, assuming that your kayak has bulkheads. This could alleviate the
stress absorbed by the typically weaker deck layup.
So far no problems carrying either my FG Ascente or RM Skerray upside down
- and they seem to live on the truck a lot of the spring/summer/fall.
