I think some back channel comments are appropriate- In the instance of the guns, while I don't carry one, have been taught how to use them, and one of the things my Daddy always told me was to never tell anyone if you owned a gun, or if you carried it, or how many. Therefore, were I to want to contribute to the discussion, I would have done so privately. And thats my thought on that:) As far as the bears in Maine issue, I have done a ton of hiking throughout Maine and New Hampshire and have encountered moose and bears. Every animal I encountered in the "wilderness" ran away almost before I could tell what I was looking at. The only time the bear didn't run away was in a public campground, where he visited my tent(with me in it) jumped on the picnic table and then stole a backpack. This is why I have only gone to a public campsite once in the last ten years(well, among other reasons). I have come upon Moose near my home while running in the woods, and all they did was stare at me and ignore me. I think that if you practice safe camping (hang food, watch where you camp etc etc as others have descibed) then I can't imagine you having many problems with the four legged wildlife. -I can't wait to hear about the trip!
