Oregon Field Guide (on OPB) is running a piece on "the
growing sport of sea kayaking" tonight (Thursday) at 8:30
smack dab in the middle of WWF (World Wrestling Federation)
Smackdown.

subject: [Paddlewise] Minnesota DNR Survey
Date: Thu, 20 Apr 2000 13:33:15 -0500
Hey all,

I received a Sea Kayak Survey from the Minnesota DNR (Department of
Natural Resources) the other day. The enclosed letter said that a
select number of these surveys were being sent out (I don't have the
survey with me now so can't get specific on the language). I am
survey 426 which means that quite a few went out. Question are geared
specifically towards usage of Minnesota's North Shore of Lake
Superior and the Lake Superior Water Trail. Other questions include
number of boats other that the one registered, other sports, how much
money does my group (doesn't mention solo) spend on the North Shore.
How much edumakation has I gots and how much money am I making. One
of the interesting aspects of the survey (which is primarily a
STRONGLY AGREE ____ STRONGLY DISAGREE type of thing), were the
questions like (again I am paraphrasing) I don't (do) kayak on Lake
Superior because: the waves are too big, the water is too cold,
concern for safety etc.

I am curious about what prompted the survey and will probably call
the DNR and look into it. Anyone else on the list get the survey and
what are your thoughts?

-Patrick

When Sarah and I were presenting our slideshow at REI this week a couple of
people mentioned that they had received the survey. I believe it is geared
toward the DNR estimating use of the water trail and other kayak friendly
facilities/camp sites which as you know are few and far between in Minnesota.
Make sure you let them know that you use the water trail at least once a week,
and perhaps you could suggest that they add a few wood-fired saunas to the
campsites! With luck we can meet up with some DNR folks at the Canoe event next
weekend. If nothing else the water trail association should have a booth at the
event.
