So yesterday, the first sunny day in what seems like a very long time, I dragged my boat a few hundred yards across the hayfield and down to the beaver pond across the street. a short while later, while watching the nesting Canada geese fight off an intruder and turtles plop off tiny islands into the water, I had a realization that could only be described as an epiphany....THERE WERE NO BLACK FLIES OUT IN THE MIDDLE OF THE LAKE!!!!! Sadly, they were present in swarms to feast on my pasty winter-tenderized flesh while I changed out of my wetsuit. It was another reason to feel sad as the boat approached the pullout.
