Paddlewisers,

To continue my saga (which spawned many useful, yet contradictory, posts
about advice on rolling)....

Tonight was my 2d pool session. Again, working in a borrowed WW boat (a
Pyrana Creek 280 for those who care/know about such things), with a WW
paddle (little tiny thing with big blades), I worked on my roll. I actually
hit my first attempt without blowing it and without bottom bracing (which is
easy to do in 3.5 feet of water). I hit a bunch over 1.5 hours, and only had
to wet exit once when I blew three attempts and sucked a little water on the
third (I didn't panic, though, which is nice).

I've got sort of a hybrid C-to-C/Sweep Roll going. I was going to try some
extended paddle rolls, but I couldn't remember how to set up for them, and
all the others there were WW paddlers who just looked at me funny when I
asked about them.

Toward the end of 1.5 hours, I started to get tired (I had a cold last
weekend, and I'm still a little below par), and my paddle kept diving on me.
I'd usually get up, but it didn't feel very solid. Several people
complemented my hip snap, and one guy offered to let me try rolling with his
hand paddles, but I declined, as I was pretty tired at that point. Maybe
next week.

It's amazing when you finally hit it consistently and it's controlled and
smooth. It's a very powerful feeling. Amazingly (and I'm ducking after I say
this) it's a lot like hitting your first long, effortless drive in golf
(which I've pretty much given up these days).

Now, I need to go back each week and refine it, then start working on my
offside. My touring kayak should be here in 2-3 weeks, and I'm sure
there'll be some adjustments (and some swims) involved when it arrives,
though hopefully I'll be getting close to a bombproof pool roll at that
point.

Thanks for listening.

Cheers,

Steve
