Linda and I were at Mission Bay ourselves that day trying to find someone
to take her brother's rowing shell. We met Derek on Lake Superior a few
years ago, and had we known, we would have swung by to say hello!

Spring has sprung a few weeks early here in Minnesota. Nine of us paddled
and picnicked on Lake Waconia yesterday. It being the day before Linda's
birthday, Jody brought a couple of helium-filled balloons to tie to the bow
of Linda's kayak and a party hat for her to wear at lunch. (Note: balloons
are literally a drag when they droop into the water.)

The water temperature was 44 degrees F., the air temperature maybe low 60s,
and it was sunny with a light breeze -- a nice day to be out. The lake
bottom near the golf course was littered with golf balls. I rolled upside
down to grab one, and then had trouble getting up again while holding the
ball in one hand. I think I found another use for those one-handed
Greenland rolls! I wore my drysuit but no head protection, and was pleased
to find that the water wasn't too cold for me to look around while upside
down. I always like to test my rolling ability in cold water just to know I
can do it.

Paddlewisers,

The San Diego Kayak Club had the good fortune of having Derek Hutchinson
teach his master's clinic and tell his North Sea crossing story last
weekend.
I am so glad that I didn't pass up this opportunity. Not only did I learn
some finer points about paddling, but I was also entertained with Derek's
charisma and humor, which alone were well worth the price of the clinic. I
can't help but think how fortunate modern sea kayaking is to have such a
unique and wonderful character as one of its pioneers. I also felt like a
small part of recent sea kayaking history when Derek about had a heart
attack
after I did an extreme high brace with a head "dink."
