A story came across the newswire that made a couple of us here at work wonder something. A guy tried to row across the Pacific (5600 miles) but only made it 1/3rd of the way before having to be rescued.

So we were wondering if someone has ever paddled across the Pacific? I know the Atlantic has been done. I know that a PW guy has done the gulf of Mexico (Arthur Hebert (sp?)). I've read an account of a guy who paddled from California to Hawaii. But has anyone ever done the entire Pacific?

Yes, if "rowing" equates to "paddling," and a crossing from Japan to Oregon
constitutes the entire Pacific. He landed here about five years ago. Do not
remember his name.

Ed Gillete from Southwest Kayaks went from the west coast to Hawaii -
that's a great story..

We were just talking about how he washed up on shore over there. If I
recall, the wind didn't blow, his stove broke....what else?

I believe that Chay Blythe or someone, with someone, went from LA to
Australia maybe 20 years ago.

Chay Blyth and John Ridgway paddled the Atlantic in
1966. Great story at this address:

Also thought you'd like to read about Andrew Halsey
-- who is trying to row his way across the Pacific as
we "speak." Check out:

"Frenchman Jo Le Guen, who failed trying to cross the Pacific rowing from
New Zealand to South America, will be brought into hospital tomorrow.
"Palliser Bay", a container-ship, that got the severely hurt in board in the
southern pacific will then reach Magellan-street.#
The 53-years old rower gave up his try approx. 3860 kms before reaching
South American coast due to (sorry, poor translation of medical terms)
infected feet, hypothermia and circulatory problems. Le Guen started in NZ
on Feb., 2nd." (taken from local newspaper - Suedkurier, Konstanz)
Cheers, Frank
