I also have used the one wrap kind of velcro that has the fuzz on one
side and the barbs on the other. It comes in 6 ft lengths from Campmor
and also available at marine shops. It does hold well in a marine
environment.

I use it principally in folding kayaks. Some models do not have
positive locking of long pieces to the cross ribs (what I mean by
positive locking are either cutouts in the ribs that are sized to allow
snapping the long pieces snuggly into them). Or sometimes the positive
locking aspect weakens over time and the cutouts in the ribs (or special
fittings) no longer hold. The velcro helps hold those long pieces in
place while you are inserting frame halves into the skin.

I also use the one wrap velcro to hold a flare light to the back of the
headband of my headlamp. The flare light sticks up like an Indian
brave's feather giving out a 360 light for being seen while night
paddling. It holds up well in a marine environment. Actually I have
switched recently to a one wrap strap that is meant to hold some
fixtures on motorboats.

Same sex velcro sounds like a good idea but I wonder if it would hold as
well as the barb and fuzz of the traditional velcro marriage.
