When my son was about 12, we used to paddle, him in his Dancer, me in my
XL-14 (big WW canoe), and Chloe, our golden retriever. She was supposed
to stay with me, but she would spot her boy out in the water and go to
him. Somewhere we have a photo of a happy dog on a sprayskirt with 2 not
quite long enough arms holding a paddle in front of her.

Not recommended for making distance, but fun.

Also, a friend of mine taught his dog to stay in the boat by letting him
swim. After a while the dog gets tired and wants very much to sit in the
boat.
