Thursday and again today (Sat) I took the opportunity to use the GPS now that SA has been turned off. What a difference! On a 5 mile walk Thurs, the odometer function of the GPS returned to 0.0 mi as my left foot struck the exact point in my driveway where I'd begun the trip. On a 10 mile paddle, the "X-track", "bearing", and "course" functions were (more or less) accurate for the very first time. That means that the speed function was also pretty accurate, also for the first time. In other words, I no longer have to paddle at 6 kts/hr (which is impossible for me, over distances of more than 0.1 mi or so) in order to have good use of all the GPS's functions. Quite aside from its value as a backup navigational aid, the GPS is a great help to me in "training" - learning about how fast I'm paddling in various wind situations, how well I'm doing with my compass bearings, etc. I hope that turning off SA doesn't turn out to have been a serious military mistake some day. Having the GPS functions is awfully nice, right now.
