[Paddlewise] Holy Kayak Batman!

Whilst some paddlers are able to claim bragging rights for first
crossings, lightest kayak built, etc, I can probably lay claim to having
the most "holy" sea kayak. Now, unless some of you have a direct link to
the Pope (via Ralph no doubt :-)), who may have blessed your craft,
check out these stats.

1980 VCP Nordkapp, completely modified for the following screw and/or
bolt holes, etc:

20 recessed deck fittings, one bolt per fitting = 20 holes
11 pad-eye cleats, two bolts per = 22 holes
3" compass hole with three bolts=4 holes
2 pairs of paddle float straps (front and rear)=8 holes
1 amidships carrying handle=4holes
2 "cinch" cleats=4 holes
6 "D" rings (for cross straps, paddle holder)=12 holes
2 "U" shaped paddle clips=4 holes
2 Prijion rudder cable through-deck fittings=6 holes
rudder hold-down mount=2 holes
rudder stern mount=2 holes
bow-painter line forward deck clip=2 holes
bow-painter steel cable loop-1 hole
front toggle=1 hole
Seaward rudder foot peddle mount (L/R)=4 holes
pump discharge=1 hole
full-length plastic keel strip=24 holes

That's 121 holes. Now add my inlaid 4 1/2" deck hatch for rudder/pump
access and
front deck 4 1/2" hatch for top-access knee tube entry=2 holes

Add two 7" hatches and one oval hatch=3 holes

Heck, add the cockpit, that's 121 plus 5=126 holes!

(There are also 30 holes from previous modifications subsequently moved
and then filled in, plus 8 hull breaches over the years, but these don't
count)

So, I kind of laugh a bit when people on this list wince at drilling one
or two holes in their kayak.

BC'in Ya
Doug Lloyd (whose theories are always full of holes)
