Locate the **centers** of two studs in the wall (stud finder from the hardware
store, then very small finishing nail). Attach an "L"-shaped 2 x 4 support
(leg of the L up), plywood gussetted at the joint, with a pair of 1/4-inch
diameter lag screws to each of the studs. This will hold an enormous amount of
weight. I held three kayaks on an extended version of one of these. Holes in
the wall? patch with vinyl spackle when you leave and renew the paint -- they
have computerized paint matching systems at larger hardware stores.

I did this in an apt I rented for several years and the property manager would
have never known ... except for the inspection tour ... the landlord was with
her, and though she fumed, he said "cool!" 'cause he was a freighter-driver.
He and I had a nice talk about yaks while she ooked and awked about what I had
done. Something about forgiveness being easier than permission. YMMV.

Or, sink some big hooks into a couple ceiling joists and hang it from there on
two-inch webbing.
