But pull into a parking lot full of kayakers with a Nordkapp

that's a few cuts above the norm. That'll put those jokers with those
plastic boats in their place! ;-)

What's more important -- form or substance?

Well, I might say both. Sure, one wants a boat that will perform well
for one's particular and/or varied purposes, but aesthetics are very
important as well. I might even go so far as to say that, to *some*
degree, an aesthetically beautiful boat will [often] be a good
performer. Of course, aesthetic preferences are subjective, but
personally, I haven't paddled any (IMO) *ugly* boats that met many of
my other requirements (handling, outfitting, etc.). The opposite (with
exceptions, of course) is [generally] true of the *beautiful* boats
I've paddled.

I once read in a chess book that "The best moves will also be the most
aesthetically pleasing ones." I've found that to be true in chess, and
I seem to be finding it true with boats as well.
