I have taken 3 beginning class & each instructor was different as were the
types of kayaks. It was interesting the different styles of teaching but
believe it or not:

"Learn to support the forward stroke with your legs."

I learned this from watching a video last night, not once was it mentioned in
any of the 3 classes.

I think it is wonderful that couples share an interest in a sport. I don't
have an SO, my dogs aren't the least bit interested in kayaking.....but I
have a good friend who has been kayaking for years. I am still very green
behind the paddles but I can't imagine learning the sport from scratch from a
friend (although with someone in a class would be fun) . Kayaking lessons are
the best way to go for sure. An instructor is emotionally detached from the
new paddler & carries a tremendous amount of responsibility teaching the
basics, safety & would never "assume" you knew or had a clue as to what was
going on. It is good to learn from someone who is going to let you learn the
hard way & not be tempted to coddle you or assist when you should be figuring
things out for yourself. I am sure many might disagree with me. I also agree
that one be allowed to move at their own pace....when I was ready to go for
it I did, took the inititive to get my gear on my own, take classes but did
consult with him on the kayak I wanted to purchase (pros/cons), & am eagerly
reading/watching everything I can get my hands. Kayaking though should be
personal preference & if your SO doesn't share the same interest, I am with
Mark, go for the boat......

While out paddling I watch others, how they paddle, body movement, that has
been a good teacher. There is much to learn still & I shall pursue it. It
gives me a sense of pride to do something I have wanted to do for years but
never had enough guts to try......& someday I hope to be proficient at it! A
class is a start, several even better for beginners. Do relax though, great
advice, I have yet to be sore from paddling but have a nerve in the back of
my neck that reminds me when I am too tense.... Good luck & by all means have
fun.
