I am heading up to Tennessee for the week of the 4th of July to try some
white water rafting and kayaking. I'll be in the Hiwassee River area and I'm
contemplating bringing the Nordkaaps. Any suggestions for a stop along the
way for some sea kayaking or possibly some lake paddling in Tennessee?

There are a couple of possibilities east of the Hiwassee area. Check
with the local outfitter. Hiwassee Lake is very low, and the WW releases
have been very meager lately. The Ocoee will be running, of course, if
you want bigger water for rafting, Class III-IV. Talk to Larry at Ocoee
Adventure Center and tell him I sent you; ask for Brad as your guide.

Anyhow, if you go east on 74 to Topton, NC and then go north on 129 to
the TN line, you'll come to Calderwood Reservoir, which is part of the
TVA/Little Tennesseee River series of impoundments at Tapoco. Cross the
bridge--Cheoah Dam is on the right--and take the first left down into a
small campground. There's a boat ramp and parking a little ways down.
The lake is about 8 miles long, very narrow and deep. I've been there
3-4 times and seen a total of maybe 8 boats. Water is clean and very
cold. Slick Rock Creek enters on the left about 1/2 mile down. Do check
it out.

You will also pass Lake Santeetlah on the way. Also pretty, but slightly
busier. Still not busy at all by most standards. If you can find the
spot where Santeetlah creek enters the lake and put in there, you'll
enjoy it.

Lake Fontana is just over the ridge from Santeetlah. I'm told it's a
good paddle to put in on the south shore (at Fontana Village?) and
paddle across to the south edge of Great Smokey Mountains Natl Park.
Mind the bears.

Enjoy,
Steve
