G'day Dave and Paddlewise

Well I agree and disagree - guess there's 303's and 303's. I've just checked
the label and it does say "Flammable: contains petroleum distillates". This
is because it is the 303 Fabric Guard product which is used to protect
fabrics and carpeting and in my case the canvas deck on my Klepper. It isn't
the 303 product used for synthetics or Hypalon.

I wouldn't question your advice about the harm petroleum distillate would do
to latex and would value your comments on the appropriatenes or otherwise of
using this product to protect the Klepper canvas deck. I should reiterate a
warning made in a previous post that if using Fabric Guard to protect the
canvas on a Klepper do remove within a few minutes any droplets which find
there way on to the Hypalon hull, otherwise the Hypalon swells temporarily
and this is a worry!

The 303 Fabric Guard aerosol is expensive (by my standards) and I hate the
smell of the spray, so I buy 1 gallon cans, wear gloves to protect against
the solvent and apply with a paint brush in a very well ventilated place.
This is much more efficient and prevents droplets reaching the Hypalon. The
benefits are a waterproof and consequently lighter and faster Klepper, some
measure of protection against UV (and just possibly some protection against
mildew, though I don't know this for sure).

I've been using this treatment on the cotton canvas deck for 18 months and
have worked my way through a gallon of the stuff. By the way I have no
shares or commercial interest in the 303 company - but am also a very
satisfied customer:~)

All the best, PeterO

Mea culpa, Peter -- you are absolutely correct. I should have picked up on
that "fabric" in your post. Glad the fabric version of 303 works so well. I
may be using it soon on my own rag boat. Thanks for sharing your expertise!
