Over Easter weekend I participated in paddling an area of Texas I have been wanting to see for some time: the Amistad Reservoir formed by the damming of the Pecos and Rio Grande rivers. The particular attraction was the rock art of the ancient Texas Indians in the range of 5000-8000 years ago. It appears in protected overhangs, rock shelters and caves of the area (and of course, in to Mexico). A lot of it is accessible only from the water. Those of you who know something about this area of Texas know it is very dry - and the huge reservoir seems an anomaly. The Texas/Mexico border runs along the bed of the Rio Grande River. Our trip began from Seminole Canyon State Park, about 30 miles west of Del Rio - the area protected by the model for the Lone Ranger of fame, fable, and TV series ("Hi Ho Silver, Away" accompanied by music from the William Tell Overture). It's a starkly beautiful and sparsely settled part of Texas.
