Just wanted to let anyone who might be in the area know that I'm planning a 4-day trip to Cayo Costa for the July 4th weekend. We are taking the ferry over (and back) for $20 and paying $10 for each kayak. There are rustic cabins but none are available - we'll be tent camping. It's a bit of an experiment. I usually go over Thanksgiving (remember the passing away (by heart attack) of our friend Ken Woodside last year?) but the water is too darned cold for swimming in late November. I've been warned about the mosquitoes in the summer. I'm taking a new 12x12 screen tent, but it's not no see 'um (teeny gnats that penetrate almost anything) mesh. I do have a can of spray that is made for spraying on screens. We're leaving on Saturday (July 1) and returning on Tuesday (July 4). Since the July 4th holiday is on a Tuesday, we'll have to take the Monday off. However, we'll be back home in time to watch the Independence Day fireworks displays. Anybody care to join us. (Luke????? - I feel guilty because I cancelled the Dry Tortugas trip that Alabaman Luke was supposed to come on). Cayo Costa is a barrier island off the west coast of Florida. West of Fort Myers - north of Naples/south of Tampa. I'd like to paddle to Cabbage Key, but would need someone to lead. I have Nigel Foster's book and we'll do some careful reading this month. My concern is that last year there was a lot of talk about sharks in the area and I'm a big wimp! Grateful for any comments/suggestions.
