Just wanted to throw in a couple of cents' worth into this.  I have a canoe 
paddle with a rotating, retractable shaft.  I can adjust the length of shaft 
according to the height of the mangrove tunnel.  It's also my spare for short 
paddles with other people (I rarely paddle alone, anyway).

I got it at (I think it's called) Marine World in Key Largo for $21.
