John Van Ness from Austin Outdoor Gear and Guidance and the Austin Paddling
Club has been working with the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department to get
some canoe/kayak trails started in Texas. The TP&W have already started
moving on John's initiative.

The Canoe/Kayak trail is to be located in the area of protection of sea
grass (see http://www.tpwd.state.tx.us/news/news/000601b.htm)

To get a copy of the map and plan the TPW Internet site
(http://www.tpwd.state.tx.us/admin/about_us/financial_rpts/pdf_docs/combined
planscientificarea.pdf).

It would be helpful to contact the TP&W to give them notice of interest in
their endeavor. John advised me that TP&W can be contacted via the "rivers"
section of their web page. TP&W has already allocated money to this project
and which as mentioned in his comments below, will as I understand it,
provide for camping and launching.

There is so much potential for sea kayaking in Texas I'm glad to see this
organization take root [John is speaking of Robert Stark's initiative to
start a Sea Kayak Club in Houston].

I have been working with Larry Mckinney of Tx Parks and Wildlife on
establishing a series of coastal kayaking trails. Their first trails have
been in the shallow sea grass flats off of Port Aransas. These are more
fishing oriented trail and are at this point "voluntary no motor areas".

This effort is two fold -protect the sea grass from prop
damage and establish easily accessible protected kayak trails. The next
phase will be to start linking communities along the Texas coast by kayak.
To accomplish this T P&W will assist communities by creating launching
sites and mapping the trail with GPS location markers. There is a meeting
this week on a proposed trail from the Port Aransas area to Rockport. I have
also discussed the need for a kayak base/launch site at Port O' Connor to
access Matagorda Island. If you or anyone else has any suggestions for
trails in your area, please pass them along. It may be a slow process
getting trails in place, but the sooner they are identified the sooner they
can happen. aogg2_at_gte.net or Austin Outdoor Gear 3411 N. IH 34 Austin,Tx
