Okay this is my first attempt at writing one of these, and I guess it would be our first trip other then paddling local lakes. The alarm had been set for 5 am and we had planned on leaving at 5:30 from our hometown near Makato for Meyer's Beach near the Apostles. The alarm went off and we eventually got our of bed around 8:00 and left the house by 9. Not a good start for our day trip. The drive was a little longer then we had thought but it beat having to stay home and do work around the house so we were both pleased. The weather was perfect, the lake was very quiet and only a slight breeze to keep from getting too warm. Our primary goal (weather permitting) was to at least say we had been able to paddle on Lake Superior (we are both beginners) and if at all possible explore the sea caves right in the area. We had a wonderful time, with the calm waters we were able to paddle through some of the tighter spots that we wouldn't have been able to do had the wind or waves kicked up. The water was very cold though, the Ranger was happy to see that we both had wet suits on, it surprised us the number of people that we saw paddling in shorts and t-shirts, I couldn't imagine being in that water dressed like that and trying to execute any kind of a rescue. All in all it was a great day, we didn't get to paddle as much as we would have liked, the day went by so quick and with the long drive home we definitely decided that it is a bit to far to drive for a day trip, (about 6 hours) but this area would be a great place to spend a weekend or two. ~~~Chad and Dianna Parrish *************************************************************************** PaddleWise Paddling Mailing List - All postings copyright the author and not to be reproduced outside PaddleWise without author's permission Submissions: paddlewise_at_lists.intelenet.net Subscriptions: paddlewise-request_at_lists.intelenet.net Website: http://www.paddlewise.net/ ***************************************************************************Received on Mon Jun 19 2000 - 10:12:42 PDT
