I had the privilege of paddling with Victoria for a few days during one leg
of her Northwest Passage trip (she eventually had to leave us behind as my
paddling partner's carpal tunnel problems meant we were holding her back).
Victoria had merry blue eyes, a ready smile, an easy laugh, and masses of
enthusiasm. She was completely unpretentious, though she was one tough
paddler - certainly a better "man" than I in the cockpit, with her routine
fifty-mile days. I smile fondly as I remember learning from her that even on
her remote passages, where she might not see anyone else for days on end,
she carried henna hair dye and mascara - and used them.
I hadn't talked to Victoria for several years, and so was unaware that she
had been ill. The world at large, and the paddling world in particular, is a
poorer place for her passing.
