Duane<< Duane and others seem to have interpreted this situation as somehow due to Sea Kayaker's reluctance to publish the article because of its content. That is not the case at all. They want very badly to publish the article but as written it can't be published (by anybody) because the permission to use part of the material submitted has not been secured. Any other magazine would be in the same situation as Sea Kayaker at this point (and even if that were not the case given the work Sea Kayaker has already put into this article I wouldn't feel right about taking it anywhere else without their permission anyhow). Sea Kayaker has offered to pay me for the article even though they may not be able to use it. They are being more than fair to me. Personally, I think the incident contains many valuable lessons for sea kayakers and I would like to see if I can make it happen even though it will mean a lot more work on my part for no additional pay. Due to my busy summer season I can tell you that if a major rewrite does happen it won't happen real soon. I burned a lot of midnight oil on this last summer in hopes of getting it out quickly to no avail. I'm no longer in such a hurry and as yet I'm not even sure it can happen.
