If anyone is interested I just posted a bunch of photos from
the Northeast Skinboat Gathering (held June 10,11 on Cape Cod USA) on
http://people.ne.mediaone.net/jkolsen/gather2000_rehash.html

If anyone wants further elaboration, or has captions they want in
place of those I put up, please let me know.

Also for anyone who attended if you have more digital photos and you
would like me to add them send them along...

I got nailed on that one. I've updated the caption...

The most common way of starting out is to get a copy of the Greenland style
kayak plans from Sea Kayaker magazine. Then modify the plans to your
dimensions. Sea Kayaker magazine has also had a couple of more recent
articles, with plans for building smaller recovery style boats, such as
the north alaskan retrieval kayak, which is in the pictures that I posted.

For books, Wolfgang Brinck's "Building the Aleutian Kayak" is a decent
how to manual. It's about building a aleutian boat, but the same skinning
and sewing techniques can be used for any style of boat. There are other
books around for more detailed information on historical craft, which could
be built or modified. http://www.pacifier.com/~qayaq is a great site
of what one person, Harvey Golden, has built.

http://robroy.totalsports.net/baidarka should be a searchable index of
past posts to the skin/frame mailing list.

How to skin the boats is a constant debate. pvc, canvas, polyester, nylon,
hemp, kevlar as skin. Latex paint, hypallon, neoprene, varnish, bees
wax epoxy, sno-coat rubber roofing, aliphateic urethane, are all being
used as coatings.
