Does anyone have the GPS headings for the sanctioned campsites and the Big
Tree Trail on Meares Island in Clayoquot Sound British Columbia? Does anyone
know if camping or landing is allowed on any of the small islands on the
protected east side of Meares? From experience I know finding the correct
campsite can be pretty hard if you’ve never been to a place before. Thank you!

Hi Anne,

There's not a lot of camp sites on Meares but the recommended
sites are at Ritchie Bay, Mosquito Harbour and Heelboom Bay.
Assuming you have charts (CHS 3649) , you may find other sites
as long as you stay out of areas marked IR ( indian reserve). Camping
is not permitted on First Nations land without permission. Tofino Sea
Kayaking Co. has a map on its outside deck showing recommended
camp sites, problem bear areas etc. etc. Their staff has the local
knowledge and are very helpful. The big tree trail is located as you
paddle up Maurus Channel on the east side of Meares past Schindler
Point. Plan to leave Tofino on a rising tide and you will have an easy
paddle over to Meares. Be VERY VERY careful crossing Tofino to
Meares.Tofino harbour is very busy with float planes, water taxis,
fish boats etc. and beware of heavy boat traffic between Tofino
and Opitsaht village on Meares. There's nothing GPS will tell
you that a chart can't answer.
