Paddlewisers, If I had never crossed a shipping lane before and read all this stuff on Paddlewise the last few days about crossing shipping lanes, I would be scared to death and never attempt to cross a shipping lane. Crossing shipping lanes really isn't that difficult. I don't believe that I could be hit by a large ship even if the captain was trying to run me over. A kayak may be slow, but it is a lot more maneuverable than a large ship. Sure, we have to be careful out there, but rather than checking the GPS, calling ships on the VHF, or firing flares, we should simply be staying alert and maneuvering with our paddles. Unless you have troubles crossing a street safely, I wouldn't worry about crossing a shipping lane.
