     Harold,

Most units rated at JIS-7 also pass the CFR-46 test but that's not a
given since the two methods of testing are so dramatically different.
Our RAY102 and RAY106 (rated to JIS-7) also pass CFR-46.

I believe JIS-7 does have an edge but CFR-46 is a close second for
paddling applications. It all boils down to, as usual, how much you
want to pay. A JIS-7 radio is more expensive to design and
     manufacture than a CFR-46 radio.

I hope that answers your question.

     Cheers.

     JP Stohrer

JP,

Thanks for the info -- this has long been a question many of us have needed a
concise answer for.

One question. Since the test modes are so different, any comments about
which of the above two standards would indicate the most bombproof radio?

Mr. Stohrer,

I am a subscriber to Paddlewise and I wish to thank you for taking the time
to educate us regarding the waterproof standards for radios. This really
is most wanted info.

I have some follow-up questions. We have had some people report problems
with radios and GPS units which were deemed to be waterproof. It turned
out that the units were indeed waterproof, however the battery compartments
were not. Can a radio claim the JIS-7 rating with a battery compartment
that is not waterproof? Do the battery compartments on your models RAY102
and RAY106 perform in a waterproof manner?

Thanks,

Bill Leonhardt
