     Bill,

I'm glad you found the information useful.

I assume you are talking about the waterproofness of the alkaline pack
that Raytheon and some of our competitors include with the units.

Naturally, the inherent problem with making a dedicated alkaline pack
waterproof is the fact that you have to be able to remove and replace
the alkaline cells which means opening and closing access to the
battery compartment. Design solutions for this problem are expensive
and are difficult to make reliable over the life of the unit.

I have evaluated the majority of the handhelds on the market and have
yet to find one that has a waterproof dedicated alkaline pack. Some
radios have the capability of either placing individual alkaline cells
or a NiCd pack directly into the unit (the Garmin 720/725 for
example), but most people like the convenience of having a dedicated
alkaline pack to keep in reserve for emergency use. We don't
recommend using alkalines for normal, daily usage since they don't
perform as well as NiCd's at high power.

Anyway, I digress. To answer your question, the alkaline pack for the
RAY102 and RAY106 are not waterproof. These radios are only
warrantied as submersible with the NiCd pack properly attached,
although I have tested them for JIS-7 with the alkaline pack attached
and have seen no water ingress.

Well, there I go; writing a novel to a simple question. Hope I didn't
     bore you.

     Have a great day.

     JP Stohrer

Mr. Stohrer,

I am a subscriber to Paddlewise and I wish to thank you for taking the time
to educate us regarding the waterproof standards for radios. This really
is most wanted info.

I have some follow-up questions. We have had some people report problems
with radios and GPS units which were deemed to be waterproof. It turned
out that the units were indeed waterproof, however the battery compartments
were not. Can a radio claim the JIS-7 rating with a battery compartment
that is not waterproof? Do the battery compartments on your models RAY102
and RAY106 perform in a waterproof manner?

Thanks,

Bill Leonhardt

I'm going to second this thank you.
I have the 100 and love it. I use it live in an AquaSafe on my front deck or in the day hatch. So far it has been great.
Knowing how to treat equipment and what to expect helps both bottom lines of paddling. Your information has been great. Long is only a problem if it doesnt't inform or entertain. Thanks for not cutting corners.
