That's bite, not bit :-) I had meant to mention last night that over the years, I've noticed that while out paddling with other kayak campers, there as been a wide disparity amongst those who do and don't take proper precautions around the camp site. Many don't seem to care much about food in their tents, placement of tent spot, where they cook, etc. If I've noticed any consistency, it would be one where the closer the group has been to know problem areas, the more effort and caution is exercised (even amongst the more lazy). My personal philosophy has always been to take adequate precautions no matter what my location is. Family camping in a park to right out there in prime bear habitat, there are non-negotiable practices that I adhere to. Foodstuffs, toothpaste, gum -- you name it -- if it is a substance that would attract attention, then I'm overly cautious. It doesn't matter where I am. Some of you have had small vermin nibble through tents and gear, so you know that even precautions to protect expensive tents and gear, still pays dividends. So, be alert, be extra cautious, and don't be lulled into complacency just because your not camped unavoidably near big bear habitat. Hang your food, keep a clean camp, and eat well away from your tent and sleeping area. Spills and such can be difficult to clean up out there. Be camp wise. And don't feed animals or leave food scraps for the little (and big critters).
