The Aussies and Kiwis have very egalitarian societies. Everybody's got a good job and it keeps him in beer and the house paid for --- and, from what I've seen, everybody makes about the same amount of money, regardless of the job (which may be a slight overstatement). One guy, taking a taxi to the airport, throws his bag in the back and sits in the front seat with the driver. It's just understood. Everybody respects everybody else --- including guides, which probably inspired that response. Aussie and Kiwi rules --- they're fair dinkum!
