Darrell asked: Have any of you used night vision scopes for owling? What were your experiences? ... ...Are there any inexpensive night vision scopes that don't use IR but rely solely on light amplification, or are they too expensive? ... Darrell, I've never went "owling", but I bought one of the relabled Russian units at Costco about four years ago and use it maybe 3-4 times a year for some birding and looking around in the dark and it seems to work fairly well. Magnification is nowhere as nice as a good set of binoculars. It uses both light amplification and IR, The specifications state 2.4x magnification and 5000x light amplification. It's a Zenit sold in the USA by Moonlight Products of San Diego 619-625-0300 according to the literature. The price on it was around $300 or so.
