I'm interested in getting good quality water-proof/resistant binoculars. I
don't need anything too fancy. I'm going to go to REI to try them out but
would love to go there with some information. Can anyone help? I can't find
the past thread on the Paddlewise archives. Thanks.

Courtney

There are fairly inexpensive ones made by Brunton and sold under
housebrand names like EMS. Run around $100 are totally waterproof and
8X20. But you may be better off with cheaper waterproof 7X50 from West
Marine. Several are available at under $200 or $150 and while weighing
more than the Brunton's can capture more light for low-light situations.

I got a new set for my birthday this year -- Swarovski. They are very
compact and fold nicely, have incredibly good clarity, and are fully
submersible. I love them. I understand they came from LL Bean. I also
have a set of Pentax "water resistant" binocs, also smallish. They are OK,
but not as good as the Swarovski and not fully waterproof.

Trouble is, most good quality, waterproof binocs have very fancy prices.

I've taken the opposite tack -- I got low power (because kayaks aren't sufficiently stable for me to use high power) and moderate size (because I don't want three pounds on my deck) and cheap / replaceable (because salt water is cruel and the prospects of theft or loss in the sea are high). I spent $27 on 7x35 Minolta binocs at the REI clearance center. They are great, considering the price, and if they last only 2 or 3 years so be it.

Excuse the self-promotion, but the latest issue of Adventure Kayak has a
very useful article about binoculars with three waterproof models
reviewed/recommended for paddlers in three price ranges: Bushnell Legend
8x26 (low-price); Celestron Noble 8 x 32 (mid-price); and Swarowvski 8 x 30
SLC (high-price). The article in Vol 3 Iss 4 will be online in February
after the new issue comes out.
