I just have a small rack and do 95% toproping on 30-50' pitches. Keeps me entertained, but nothing too serious. I can climb most 5.9s and I'm working on 5.10's. >What other activities do you do? Rock climbing 4-5x per year Paddle (kayaks) 3-4x per month Canoeing 4-5x per year I build kayaks/gear every weeknight (seems like) Mountain biking 3-4x per year XC skiing 8-10x per winter Downhill 3-6x per winter Backpack (camping) 4-5x per year Car camp 5-7x per year I definitely paddle first and foremost, but I'm somewhat of a social* creature, so if I've paddled solo quite a bit, and nobody is free to go paddling, I'll go do whatever other activities my friends are up to. If I'm tired of paddling alone, I'd just as soon do a 'second-tier' activity rather than sitting at home wishing I had someone to paddle with! *I don't like doing outdoor activities in a big group, but with 1-2 friends is nice. Other than rock climbing, which takes as much of a sense of body awareness as kayaking, I don't think any other activities directly benefit or detract from my paddling skills, but they all contribute to my enjoyment of the natural world around me. (They also help me to forget about work and unwind!) Shawn -- Shawn W. I run 20-25 miles a week, mostly on wooded trails, and participate in area road races in which I usually finish slightly ahead of the middle of the pack (eg. last week I placed 81st out of 178 runners). I find the two sports complement each other nicely (one mostly above the waist, one mostly below the waist) but one thing I cherish about running is the relative lack of gear. I can get out of bed on a summer morning, grab two socks, two shoes and a pair of shorts and be out the door within minutes. I think about that sometimes when I'm staring into the rear hatch of my car saying "Let's see: PFD, skirt, paddle, spare paddle, pump, paddle float, paddleshoes, lunch, water, extra clothes, sunglasses, hat, binoculars..." You get the idea. You get the idea. Get thee a surf ski. "Let's see: pfd, paddle, shorts, boat and I'm off". You get to cut your equipment requirements from 5 items to 4, and you don't need to match socks. ;-) You do live somewhere with a quick barefoot walk to the water right? kirk *************************************************************************** PaddleWise Paddling Mailing List - All postings copyright the author and not to be reproduced/forwarded outside PaddleWise without author's permission Submissions: PaddleWise_at_PaddleWise.net Subscriptions: PaddleWise-request_at_PaddleWise.net Website: http://www.paddlewise.net/ ***************************************************************************
I like many sports in addition to sea kayaking including mountain biking, road biking, mountain trail running, WW kayaking and canoeing, raft trips- if I can ever get a permit again, downhill and XC skiing and snowshoeing. Too many interests and too little time. I've shelved rock climbing and fly fishing for lack of time. Most of my actual recreational time is probaly spent biking and running because of the convenience.
