Just thought I'd pass on an experience I had last week with the Etrex
submersability issue. I was using mine without a drybag (I found it too much of
a hassle to operate the controls and read the display inside a drybag), and it
fell off my deck into about a foot of water during a landing in mild surf. Took
a minute or two to find it, due to the cloudy water (in this regard, the yellow
color was a big help in locating it). Anyway, it not only got water in the
battery compartment (which anyone whose been following this thread in the past
knows is NOT watertight), but also some kind of green slime (sort of like
liquified seaweed). When I tried to fire it up, it wouldn't come on, so I left
the battery cover off to dry out for a while. Still wouldn't come on. I tried
cleaning the battery contacts etc etc and nothing worked. Unfortunately, this
happened the day before we got caught in a fog bank between Hot Springs Cove and
Cow Bay in the Clayoquot sound area when it would have been rather nice for it
too have worked. Dang!
