One of the most asked questions I had about my new Romany Explorer at the Great Lakes Symposium was how much the boat weighed. Since I've had the boat for all of a few months I hadn't gotten around to weighing it. (Heck, I was happy just to be paddling it.) The only answer I could give is that according to the specs the Explorer with skeg is supposed to weigh in at 58 lbs. That was met with a lot of skepticism, with one person telling me it probably weighed about 70 lbs.

So yesterday I broke out the scale, weighed myself (sigh, I still need to lose about 5-10 lbs), then grabbed the boat and stepped back on the scale. And the weight? You expect me to tell you the weight? Maybe I should make a little betting pool of this... Naw, I'll just tell you. :)

62 lbs, with skeg and hatches. That's only four lbs over the listed weight. I'm not sure how much the three rubber hatches weigh, they may weigh the boats without the hatches.

All I know is that it seems much lighter than my old plastic boat (which was listed at 65 lbs, hey Tim could you weigh that thing for me?).

So my question to all of you is how much does your boat actually weigh as compared to what your manufacturer claims? Especially my fellow Explorer paddlers. Do I have a light Explorer, should it have come out closer to that 70 lbs that was quoted to me?

Who learned to roll in less than an hour from John Daly at the symposium and is entirely pleased (OK, it's a Pawlata roll, but I still come up pretty good).

Any roll that leave you breathing air instead of water is a good roll.
Congratulations! BTW, my Explorer (also new) weighs 63#.
