For all but the last 3 months of my paddling life I've paddled Euroblades. For the last 3 months I've paddled Greenland sticks. Today I paddled, out about 8 miles using a Greenland stick then back using a Euroblade. While I'm fairly certain my Greenland technique is average for someone having done it only 3 months, what I found really interesting was that 3 months worth of focus on "elbows in" torso rotation has noticeably improved my Euroblade technique torso rotation. I haven't lost any skills using my Euroblade during the 3 month hiatus (bracing, rolls, etc.), but my forward stroke technique feels smoother/easier. So I'm curious. Has anyone, who paddles both blade types/techniques, noticed similar changes in one style after learning/using the other style? Or am I just full of it 'cause unused muscle groups were getting a long missed workout? Spencer A. Smith P.S. Whatever happened to power boaters (travelling quite fast) giving kayakers and other power boaters 100' (30m) berths, especially when the kayaker isn't in a major traffic area and presumably plenty visible? Or am I living in a dream world? *************************************************************************** PaddleWise Paddling Mailing List - All postings copyright the author and not to be reproduced/forwarded outside PaddleWise without author's permission Submissions: PaddleWise_at_PaddleWise.net Subscriptions: PaddleWise-request_at_PaddleWise.net Website: http://www.paddlewise.net/ ***************************************************************************

I don't see any reason to change it this season. I never used a stick before this past week, at the Atlantic Kayak Tours pre-symposium and symposium. I spent two full days learning the technique from Doug Van Doren during the pre-symposium, and then took his intermediate and advanced classes during the symposium. On Sunday I went out with my euro blade, and I found the same thing - definite, noticeable improvement, even in that short period of time. One other thing - my roll with the euro blade has been spotty, but with the stick it was virtually 100%. (Of course, that was using the stick with my Romany; when I tried to roll Doug's Betsy Bay, it was a different story. That boat just did NOT want to roll up, though I've seen Doug's demonstrations several times, and he makes it look totally effortless.)
