The Vancouver Sun is reporting in today's edition; "One Tofino resident who did not want to be named, said he recently saw numerous photographs of kayakers feeding hot-dogs to the wolves by hand. In Mid - May when kayakers returned from a trip to Vargas Isl., they developed photos of the hand fed wolves. "They were sitting on the beach holding wieners and the wolves were just six inches away", said the resident. "It was horrible to see. The stupidity of people is amazing". In Florida we have a similar problem with Gators and Monkeys. The Monkeys become aggressive as do the Gators. Many "well intentioned backcountry travelers" (paddle, pack or otherwise) believe that it is OK for "them" to feed the animals. The problem is that the animal will associate humans and food. All humans. This would include the small child having lunch by the creek or the toddler with a biscuit in the playpen back at camp. This is the size human that a wild animal will normally target. When you don't feed a potentially dangerous animal, you are doing them and us a favor.
